BookJuliet: Now, dear sweet Nurse…Oh, why do you look so sad? If you have bad news, tell me kindly. If it’s good news, then don’t look so unhappy.
Nurse ( sitting down): I’m tired. Leave me alone for a time. All my body ached! I’ve walked a long way! Juliet: Come on, tell me, speak. Dear, dear Nurse , speak! Nurse: What’s your hurry? Can’t you wait for a few minutes? Don’t you see that I need to rest? Juliet: Is your news good or bad? Just answer that and I’ll be happy. Is it good or bad? Nurse: Well… Romeo’s face is more handsome than other men’s faces. You can’t compare his body with other men’s bodies – his is better. He’s a very nice and polite young man. Have you had dinner yet? Juliet: No, no. But I knew all these things before . what did he say about our marriage? What about that? Nurse: I’ve got a terrible headache! My head is breaking into twenty pieces. My back’s hurting too – oh, my back! Why did you send me out? I nearly died from that long walk! Juliet ( trying to be patient): I’m really sorry you’re not feeling well. Sweet, sweet Nurse, tell me , what did my love say? Nurse: Your love says, like an honest gentleman, and a kind and polite one… where’s your mother? Juliet (angry now): My mother? Here, at home. Where do you think she is? What a strange answer! ‘Your love says, like an honest gentleman, ‘’Where’s your mother?’’’ Nurse: Dear lady, why are you so angry? Is this all the thanks I get? Is this going to help my aching body? In future, you can take your own messages! Juliet (very patiently): What did Romeo say? Nurse: Have you got permission to go to church today? Juliet: I have. Nurse: Then hurry to Friar Laurence’s house. Your husband is waiting for you there. Now your face is turning red! I have to go a different way and get a rope. Your love is going to use is to climb up to your room after dark. I’m doing all this hard work just to please you. Now I’m going to have my dinner. Go quickly to friar Laurence. Juliet: I’ll hurry. What wonderful Luck! Dear Nurse, goodbye. A room in Friar Laurence’s house Friar (worried): I hope that this marriage won’t result in any trouble for us. Romeo: I hope not too. But if sadness follows, it can’t take away the happiness of one short minute with Juliet. If you join our hands in marriage, death can’t hurt us. If I can call her mine, that’s enough for me. Friar: These strong feelings of love don’t bring happiness. They burn, and then they die. Don’t love so strongly. Then your love will be a long one. (looking up and seeing Juliet) Here comes the lady. How fast and lightly she runs! (Juliet comes running in. She kisses Romeo) Juliet: Good evening, Father. Friar: Good evening. Romeo: Ah, Juliet, are you filled with happiness as I am? Speak to me with your sweet, musical voice. Juliet: I can’t describe how happy I am! Friar: come with me. This won’t take long. I’m not going to leave you two alone until you’re married. (Romeo, Juliet and the Friar go out.) |
